Hiring a painter
Painters in Cochrane
Foothills town, famous wind, big views — hire a painter who's painted in it before.
Cochrane isn't just Calgary's smaller neighbour — it's a different painting environment. The wind here is a standing joke because it's real, the views mean a lot of west-facing glass, and the housing stock runs from established Bow Meadows and GlenEagles to brand-new Fireside and Sunset Ridge. A painter who has only worked sheltered city lots will learn all of this on your house.
We come out from Calgary for Cochrane jobs and price the drive into the quote — no travel games. What follows is what I'd want any Cochrane homeowner to know before hiring, me or anyone else.

The homes we paint here
Two Cochranes, roughly: the established neighbourhoods — Bow Meadows, GlenEagles, Riviera — where first and second repaints are now due, with fading exteriors and interiors ready to leave the 2000s behind; and the new west-side communities — Fireside, Sunset Ridge, Riversong, Heartland — with young families, builder finishes and the settling issues every new house brings.
The through-line is exposure. Big lots, big skies and big windows mean rooms with dramatic evening light that changes every colour in them, and exteriors that take weather with nothing breaking it. West-facing rooms get a blast of warm evening sun that enriches warm colours and washes out cool ones — we always test samples at sunset here, not noon.
What to ask before you hire
Cochrane's wind separates painters who've worked here from those who haven't:
- What do you do differently for wind-exposed exteriors? Listen for flexible caulking, sealing and cure-weather discipline.
- What's your reschedule policy when the weather turns mid-job? It should be free and ungrudging.
- How do you handle the drive from Calgary — included, or extra?
- For west-facing rooms, will you test samples in evening light before we commit?
- Written scope with a fixed price before starting — yes or no?
Local notes
The wind is the whole story for exteriors. Wind-driven rain finds every weak edge of caulking, and UV at this exposure fades south and west walls years ahead of the rest. Our exterior prep in Cochrane is obsessive about sealing — the paint is only as good as what's underneath — and we spec products that stay flexible through freeze-thaw cycles.
Inside, the consideration is light, not weather. Foothills homes tend toward big windows and open plans with long sightlines, so colour has to flow room to room. We plan palettes across the whole main floor rather than one wall at a time, and we test in the evening light you'll actually live with.
How pricing works here
Same written-price approach as Calgary, drive included. In Cochrane the number moves most on exteriors — height, access on larger lots, and how much weather the existing coating has taken. Interiors move on the usual things: size, condition, and how far the new palette travels from the old one.
Free estimate, free visit, fixed price on the approved written scope, GST on top, $500 minimum job. If a painter quotes your exterior without asking about exposure and prevailing weather, that quote is a guess.
I quote on the job, not the drive.
Questions from Cochrane homeowners
- Does Cochrane's wind really affect exterior paint?
- Yes — wind-driven rain and dust punish weak caulking and unsealed edges, and the freeze-thaw cycles open hairline cracks wider every spring. The defence is prep: flexible caulking, sealed edges, and never painting into a bad forecast. Ask your painter what they do differently for exposed sites.
- When is exterior season in Cochrane?
- Late May through September, same as Calgary — coatings need the surface and air temperature, dew point and cure forecast to satisfy the technical data sheet. Cochrane's wind can steal days inside that window, which is why the reschedule policy matters.
- My west-facing living room looks different every evening. How do I pick a colour?
- Test large samples on the actual wall and look at them morning, noon and evening — especially evening. West light enriches warm colours and washes out cool ones. We won't let you commit from a noon viewing alone.
- Do you charge extra to come out to Cochrane?
- No — the drive is part of the quote. Ask any painter this before the visit, not after the invoice.
