Hiring a painter

Painters in Airdrie

A young city of new builds and young families — where the right questions are about prep, not paint brands.

Most Airdrie homes are younger than the paint on a Kensington bungalow. That youth shapes every hiring decision: you're usually not choosing between painters for a full restoration, you're choosing who handles builder-grade drywall, settling nail pops and the great beige-to-colour conversion honestly.

A lot of Airdrie's painters drive up from Calgary — including me. That's fine, but ask about it directly: some quotes quietly carry a travel surcharge, and some painters won't come back for a touch-up because the drive isn't worth it to them. We treat the QE2 as part of the job — same written price as Calgary, and we come back if something needs fixing.

The homes we paint here

Airdrie is overwhelmingly new-build: two-storey family homes, townhomes and laned homes in communities like Bayside, Coopers Crossing, Ravenswood and Williamstown. The interiors are builder-grade — decent drywall, forgettable colour, and the three shades the builder offered. The transformation per dollar here is enormous, because you're usually going from 'every wall the same greige' to a palette that was actually chosen.

New houses settle for the first two to five years. Nail pops, hairline drywall cracks at corners, caulking shrinking away from trim — all normal, all cosmetic, and all things paint alone won't fix. Whoever you hire should talk about prep before they talk about colour.

What to ask before you hire

For Airdrie's housing stock, the estimate conversation should sound like this:

  • How do you handle nail pops and settling cracks — fill, or screw back and fill? Only the second one lasts.
  • Is travel from Calgary included in this price, or added on?
  • If I call about a touch-up in six months, will you actually drive back up?
  • What paint line are you specifying for high-traffic family areas — and is it scrubbable?
  • Will the scope be in writing before you start, with the price fixed on approval?

Local notes

Airdrie sits on open prairie with nothing to break the wind coming up the QE2 corridor. South and west exteriors take the full force of it — UV fading plus wind-driven dust scuffing the lower walls. Flexible caulking and proper sealing matter more here than in a sheltered inner-city lot, and the paint is only as good as what's underneath it.

Big-sky light is honest light: colours read truer here, which means undertones show. That warm greige can go pink at 4pm. We test large samples on the actual wall — morning, noon and evening — before anyone commits, and any painter worth hiring in Airdrie will do the same.

How pricing works here

Same price as Calgary — no travel surcharge, no 'we'll see when we get there'. What moves the number in Airdrie is mostly condition: how much settling the house has done, how many nail pops and cracks need proper repair, and how dramatic the colour change is. Newer homes need less prep; ten-year-old builder paint needs more.

After a free visit you get a written scope and a fixed price that doesn't move unless the scope does. The estimate and the visit are free, GST is added on top, and the $500 minimum applies here too. Full breakdown on the how-we-charge page.

Questions from Airdrie homeowners

My Airdrie home is three years old and already has nail pops. Is that normal?
Completely normal — houses settle for the first two to five years. It's cosmetic, not structural. The fix is to screw the pops back, fill, sand and re-caulk as part of prep. Paint over a nail pop is just a coloured nail pop, so ask your painter how they handle them before you hire.
Should I wait until the house finishes settling before repainting?
You don't need to wait years. Proper prep — screwing pops back, meshing stress cracks — deals with settling as it stands. If new pops appear later, that's what the touch-up conversation is for. Ask your painter whether they'll come back for that.
Do Airdrie painters charge extra for the drive from Calgary?
Some do, quietly. We don't — the drive is part of our quote, same written price as Calgary. Whoever you hire, ask before the visit, not after the invoice.
What's the most common repaint in Airdrie?
The main floor: trading builder beige for a real palette across the open plan, plus stairwells and primary bedrooms. It's the highest-impact-per-dollar work in a young house.
